What I noticed
Independent professionals are routinely assessed through institutional proxies—employer, title, credential, network—even as they create valuable work across multiple systems. Their capability, relationships, and intellectual assets are difficult to see as a coherent whole.
What I researched
Institutions of One brings together questions of ownership, portable reputation, capability measurement, longitudinal evidence, participation ethics, and the conditions under which independent work can acquire continuity without being reduced to an employer, title, platform, or personal brand.
What I built
The practice includes an Observatory, Ownership Index, Portfolio Professional research, Question Lab, The I/1 Edit, Apply the Cases, partnership and applied-inquiry pathways, and an Ownership Platform with evidence-governed research infrastructure. This case study presents the public architecture while protecting participant and research systems still under development.

The problem. Independent professionals are assessed through institutional proxies — employer, title, credential, network — while the work, capability and relationships that actually constitute their practice stay illegible.
What it does. Runs the public face of a research programme studying how individual capability becomes durable, portable and ownable: an Observatory, the Ownership Index instrument, Portfolio Professional research, a Question Lab, and partnership and applied-inquiry pathways.
Built on. A research platform with evidence-governed measurement instruments and longitudinal infrastructure, served from Vercel.
What it does not establish. The Ownership Index and the Portfolio Professional instrument are candidate instruments. Neither is validated, normed or activated, and the programme's own gates say so. Participant data and research operations stay private.
